HAPPY, OUTGOING AND PLAYFUL.  Nellie is a 1-year-old standard dachshund who epitomizes the best of the breed. She’s friendly, affectionate, curious, confident and just a wee bit stubborn – everything you would expect from a doxie. Dachshunds are also known for their loyalty and make wonderful family dogs, although they can’t take rough handling from youngsters (and should be discouraged from jumping off high furniture) because of their backs. For that reason, we’re looking for adopters who don’t have kids under the age of 7. Nellie enjoys playing with other dogs, barking at squirrels and sniffing around the yard. A fence is definitely needed unless you’re going to leash-walk her, since all hounds were bred to hunt and will take off after something that attracts their interest.  Nellie is crate-trained and seems to be house-trained (although dachshunds can be a little difficult in this regard, as aficionados of the breed know). Nellie had a thorough vet exam and got a good health report, but she did test positive for heartworms. Because she doesn’t have any clinical signs, she received a 30-day course of doxycycline along with Heartgard (the “slow kill” method of treating heartworms, which is not as risky as the immiticide injections and doesn’t require strict crate confinement).  All she needs now is ongoing monthly doses of Heartgard, like any other dog. Apply for Nellie online at www.savethestrays.org or email info@savethestrays.org for our application. Adoption fee $225.
